Gotanda no Hashira Matsuri (Festival using pillars held at Gotanda district)

Schedule:8月14日

Venue:王子の森公園

Phone number:+81-894-24-5924

[Designated Ehime prefectural intangible cultural assets]

This festival is held at Oji no Mori Koen Park on the 14th of August every year. It started based on the tragic tale of an ascetic of Kongoin Temple during the Warring States era (1467-1568). He was mistakenly shot by a friendly arrow. This Shinto ritual event started to drive out an evil spirit that caused bad diseases which attacked the area after his unfortunate death. Torches are thrown one after another toward the top of 20-meter pillar placed in the middle, which gives an air of soul-stirring fantasy.
